Wednesday August 3

A cool mist hung over the lake and in the valleys as we awoke this morning. Polar Bear swimmers may have even felt a little warmer in the water than the air as they headed out to wake camp with their loud and vigorous chant. The fog lifted as we climbed up the hill to the dining hall. Those up early for roller bears were treated to a spectacular view of foggy river valleys with waves of green mountains and a clear blue sky above. Breakfast included delicious egg sandwiches, loads of berries, yogurt, toast, oatmeal, juice, and cereal. Community work time after breakfast seemed especially cheerful as we all headed out to help keep camp beautiful. A huge and generous batch of tasty Jasper Hill Cheese could be seen being unloaded into the kitchen as Pizza dough was being made and breakfast dishes washed. It was day three of our focus areas and things like knives, spoons, and chess pieces really began to take shape in woodworking. Then we were off to such electives as Frisbee, Farm and Garden time, Backyard games, and our giant slip and slide was open. Many smiling wet and soapy campers could be seen speeding down our hill and running back up. Dinner was of course wood-fired pizza from out very own pizza oven. The staff has it down to a science at this point in the summer cranked out 90+ pizzas in just over an hour! We enjoyed eating and sitting in the grass while sipping ice-tea and water as the day cooled off. The evening activity was Casino Night and the costumes worn were the most diverse and eclectic all summer. We sang our closing song together and headed back down to our cabins as the stars came out and the ethereal call of the wood thrush wound its way through camp mixing with excited and maybe a little tired chatter. We brushed our teeth and readied ourselves for bed before hopping in our bunks and zipping up our bags.
